9 October 2009  --- The Final Countdown Begins!
NINE DAYS!!!

The word from the trees:  They're getting ready for you.  The leaves all got together and said, "Hey, there's a bunch of really cool people coming out next weekend.  Let's all look good and turn pretty colors for them. So far it's looking really great!

The new trails are amazing.  And there's no 2-way traffic on the footpaths this year.

INDIANA vs. ONTARIO
I was asked for an update.  Last year Ontario was kicking some serious Hoosier butt.  This year it's the revenge of the Hoosiers!  The score at the moment is 80 runners from Indiana, 62 from Ontario.  Is Canada about to make a move here?

TIGERS vs. TWINS
  Does anyone really want to talk about this?

IMPORTANT PREPARATIONS!
You're reading the website.  On Race Day Instructions page, there's a very important item beginning with a "B"  Do you know what it is?

RUNNING THIS WEEKEND
Terence is running the half-marathon course on SUNDAY at 7:30 with a few others if you want to run 13.  (NOTE--YESTERDAY I THOUGHT HE WAS DOING IT ON SATURDAY--THIS IS A CORRECTED VERSION) There are a couple options that will cut it down to 10 or less if you want.  There are also a bunch of guys running the half-marathon course at 8:00 Sunday too.

TOMORROW:

RUN THRU THE RAPIDS
The David D Hunting YMCA is the venue for our expo as well as the start & finish of the marathon.  We're excited to be there another year. Something else you might like to know:  38 years ago, the YMCA service club started a marathon.  Over the years, it changed venues, changed distances, the old guys got older and died (which old guys will do sometimes) and the younger guys have taken over.  And this year is the 39th year they've put on a race.  It's a 5K and 10K now, and it's coming up on Saturday the 10th.  It's truly a Run Thru the Rapids too!  Up and down the Grand on the River Walk.  NICE!

Info at http://runthrutherapids.com All proceeds go to support YMCA Camp Manitou-Lin

EVERY STRIDE 5K & 10K AND the Nike Human Race

It's not only the Nike Human Race, and the Every Stride 5K & 10K!  It's our post-race party!  After a 5-day cooldown period following the marathon, join us out at Candlestone Golf & Resort for a great time.  Wear your marathon gear, share your "war stories" and celebrate!  Check it out at www.mirunning.com  for more info.  YOU CAN ALSO VOLUNTEER TO HELP if you like.

Plus, wear your marathon stuff--shirt, hat, socks, whatever, and get into a free drawing for one of two free entries to our 2010 marathon!

Notes from the Staff

From Rich & Syd, the Relay organizers - Remember that one person picks up all the race packets for the team.  The shuttle bus schedule is in the race program, which is in your race pack.

Off to Niagara Falls

The lovely Francine and I are off to Niagara Falls where her oldest daughter Rachel is getting married this weekend.  When I said I was going to jump in Lake Ontario to finish the 5 Great Lakes, someone suggested I should do the Atlantic and Pacific in the same summer sometime.  Heck, I've done that in a month.  Also, swam in the Antarctic Ocean and ran a marathon on top of the Arctic Ocean.  I've seen the Indian Ocean from a couple different places but never been in it yet.  Though I'm wondering why not.

Oh, did you know there are 10 microbreweries in and around Niagara Falls Canada?  I wonder what a guy could do with that kind of information.  Hmmm.....

Can't wait to see you all at the FINISH LINE!

and the adventure continues....

The Final Countdown BEGINS

8 October 2009  --- The Final Countdown Begins!
TEN DAYS!!!

It's physical.  It's emotional.  It's a life-changing experience.  And it's all about YOU!  Everything is coming together.  The finish line, the course, the volunteers, the portajohns, the YMCA!  We're almost ready for you!

AND

YOU are almost ready too!  That last little bit of training.  A nice, but not too long run this weekend.  Your preparation is coming together.  You're strong.  You're fast.  You're good looking.

CHECK THE FAQ, THE COURSE MAP, AND THE RACE DAY INSTRUCTIONS ON THE WEBSITE!!
If a runner falls in the forest and there's no one around to hear him, does he make a noise?
Is there anything special I should bring along for the race director?
What color are the shirts?
Where can spectators go on the course?

These and many other (mostly relevant) questions can be answered at grandrapidsmarathon.com

RUNNING THIS WEEKEND
Terence is running the half-marathon course on Saturday at 7:30 with a few others if you want to run 13.  There are a couple options that will cut it down to 10 or less if you want.

Or, one of my favorites:

Now, you should be in your taper by that time, so a nice 10K tempo run up and down the banks of the Grand River is probably just about what you need that day.  Plus, the race supports Camp Manitou-Lin, the YMCA camp just south of Grand Rapids.  So, come out and run, get familiar with the YMCA, and have a great time.

RUNNING THE COURSE

Yesterday was our annual staff run of the marathon course.  It's the time we get to earn our medals for running the marathon, so that we can be out there for all of you on race day.  It's a valuable experience too--we get to check out the whole course.
Last year, our 21 mile mark and the turnaround just past it were gone!  The City of Grand Rapids had repaved their piece of Indian Mounds Road, and as others on the staff came back toward me on that piece, they kept asking "Where was the turnaround?"  Fortunately, I had GPS coordinates and good descriptions of where everything was, and I could just go out and put them back in where they belonged.
Anyway, the course is ready.  And it's beautiful.  You'll like the changes since last year.  Much nicer.

Gail, the lovely Francine, Terence, Dr. Ed, Andy, and I ran the full marathon course.  George and Ken ran the half.  (Did I miss anybody?)  Rudy rode along and took some pictures.  Rick ran, practicing running with his pace team sign for about 20 miles.  A nice day.  Hot showers at the Y, and longer than I should have spent in the whirlpool afterwards

UNDER TWO WEEKS!  Soon we'll start the 10-day countdown!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here's a couple of thoughts, now that it's getting to crunch time--
  • If you want to email me to ask questions, that's cool.  Please check out the website first though--we have FAQ, course map, race day instructions, etc.  Lots of good stuff.
  • Put something pertinent in the subject line.
  • Sign your name.  I'm pretty likely to delete stuff otherwise.
Believing Your Own Baloney
Yeah, I wasn't originally going to use the word baloney there, but you know...
What's the first thing you need to do to be able to run a marathon?
Believe in yourself!
"Of course I can do that.  I'm Marathon Don."  I like to say things like that.  I don't necessarily alway believe it before I say it, but just saying it makes me expect more out of myself.  I also manage to do some pretty cool stuff along the way.  It's not because of some great talent or physical ability (both of which I have in fairly limited quantities), rather it's because I choose to believe that I can do ANYTHING.
Maybe I'm wrong.  Who knows?
There's another side to the same coin.  Try thinking the world is out to get you, that people don't love you, that you can't do something.  DANGER, WILL ROBINSON, DANGER!  Start believing your own baloney here, and it's going to get you into trouble.
The things we say to ourselves shape who we are and what we accomplish.  The people who win are the ones who continually feed themselves good thoughts.
Examine what you're thinking--especially now, as marathon time approaches.  Sometimes negative thoughts will creep in.  Replace them with positive ones.  You're strong, you're fit, and you're capable!  Remember that.
500 is now a low number
Pat Carey ran Akron last weekend.  At least 7 people on the staff ran marathons this weekend.  Several are running next weekend.  Your marathon staff already had well over 500 marathons to their credit.  I'm really proud of all of these people.
And for all of YOU!  I'm proud of you too--the miles you put in, the belief in yourself, the sacrifice you put in--you're awesome.
Running with the Staff this weekend
I don't know who's running what this weekend, but we'll try to coordinate something.  The lovely Francine and I are off to Niagara Falls where her oldest daughter Rachel is getting married this weekend.  Rick & Lynne are off to pace in Chicago.  When the plans solidify, I'll let you know who's running what.  Whatever it is, it'll probably be short--it's taper week, right?
Can't wait to see you all at the FINISH LINE!
and the adventure continues....
Finish Line Wine
My good friend, Peter Gower started this business a few years ago--it's a great way to commemorate your marathon finish, whether it's your first time or your 100th.
(Oh--George on my staff is something of a wine expert.  He thinks it's some pretty good wine too!)
IT'S HARD TO SOAR WITH THE EAGLES WHEN YOU'RE WORKING WITH TURKEYS...
Now there's something that doesn't apply to me AT ALL!  We had one of our last few staff meetings last night.  By the end of the night, I come away with tears in my eyes--these people are SO GOOD it just amazes me.  The meeting is supposed to start at 7:00, but from the time people walk in the door (visiting my beer fridge in the garage on the way in, of course) there are things happening.  Kathy & Tammy coordinating packet pickup with Dave from the Y.  Shawn checking with Ken, Francine, Jen about course marshall locations, and coordinating with Andy on the signs.  Bob, working on figuring out where we're going to get ice cream for the finish area.  I hate to break up the little meetings to start the big meeting.
There were over 25 people at our house last night, and EVERY ONE OF THEM is an EAGLE.  Not a turkey in the bunch!  I am so proud of them you can't imagine.
It's coming down to the wire now!  You'll start hearing from me a little more often.  The excitement builds.
50 Miles in the Woods
Andy Grosvenor, who's on our staff, just finished running a 50 mile trail run at a race our good friend Steve Webster just put on.  Nice work Andy.
Meanwhile, Kathy, along with one of our pacers, Steph, are off to run the Wineglass Marathon in Corning, New York this weekend.  You see, our staff doesn't just run a marathon, we RUN MARATHONS!  Total staff experience:  Around 520 marathon or longer races.  (It's hard to keep track, because the number goes up almost every weekend.)
Just another reason I'm proud of them.
Staff Run - Sunday October 4th at 8:00
Every year, the staff of the Metro Health Grand Rapids Marathon has what I like to refer to as a "Dress Rehearsal" a couple weeks before the marathon.  It gives us a chance to earn our medals and to check out the course in case anything "interesting" may have happened to it.
If you'd like to come out and get a final long run on the course, some of us are doing the full 26.2.  Run part of it with us, meet us out on Indian Mounds Road with some Gatorade (or beer or something) or just come and hang out a little bit.  We're starting at the Y at 8:00 Sunday October 4
and the adventure continues....
