SOMEWHERE, OFF IN THE DISTANCE... ...the theme from Rocky is starting to echo in my head. Less than three weeks now. Many have done their last really long run, a bunch of you at our 20 mile training run this past weekend. Maybe a long run this weekend, but then it's definitely taper time! THE REVENGE OF THE HOOSIERS Remember last year when we had more Canadians than Hoosiers running here? Well, our friends to the south are making their move! The score right now is Indiana 75, Ontario 60. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PRICE INCREASE!! If you or someone you know isn't registered yet, it's time. After the 30th, the price goes up another TEN BUCKS! So, get those registrations in and save a little cash! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A Boast from the Pace Team Director
Our race will have 45 very experienced pacers. That's about one pacer for every 70 runners.
By comparison, the Chicago Marathon has one pacer for every 450 runners, and the New York City Marathon has one pacer for every 1500 runners.
Universities like to brag about their faculty to student ratios, so why shouldn't we? The fact is that the Grand Rapids Marathon is a much more personal & friendly experience than the mega-marathons, and our pacers will be easy to find and happy to help you during the race.
Enjoy your tapering & we'll see you in a couple of weeks!
Dr. Rick - Pace Team Director ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BAGEL BEANERY GRAND RAPIDS KIDS MARATHON We have nearly 850 kids registered for the kids marathon right now. If your kids are training but you haven't signed them up yet, please get them in so we have the right amount of shirts, etc. Thanks. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SHIRTS, HATS, OTHER STUFF Still have a bunch of hats. They're ten bucks. You want one, click on the link below. Same thing with the old shirts. Help me clear my house out before they deliver the new stuff. The YMCA Service Club sponsors a great little tune-up race on Saturday, October 10th. It's the 39th (I think) annual Run Thru the Rapids 5K and 10K. It's a great event--you can run the downtown river walk trails up and down the Grand River, past some great Art Prize pieces along the way. Sign up at http://runthrutherapids.com All proceeds go to support YMCA Camp Manitou-Lin EVERY STRIDE 5K & 10K Every Stride 5K & 10K is the week after the marathon. It's also the Nike Human Race. It's cool. The 5K is mostly on the golf course. The 10K is mostly on road. It's the best of both worlds! Go to www.mirunning.com for more info. Plus, wear your marathon stuff--shirt, hat, socks, whatever, and get into a free drawing for one of two free entries to our 2010 marathon! |

It's a Gateway Drug After the Hogeye Marathon in Arkansas a few years ago, I went to a party with the local running club. It was there that I watched probably the only complete Simpsons episode that I've ever seen. It was about medicinal marijuana. "The doctor says it's a gateway drug," Homer quipped. Well, I don't advocate marijuana use, but you could look at the half-marathon that way. Some of you doing the half are going to have so much fun, that next year you'll be back for the full 26.2. Hey, we all have our own addictions. Ours are just HEALTHY!
Staff Run - Next weekend-- Every year, the staff of the Metro Health Grand Rapids Marathon has what I like to refer to as a "Dress Rehearsal" a couple weeks before the marathon. It gives us a chance to earn our medals and to check out the course in case anything "interesting" may have happened to it. If you'd like to come out and get a final long run on the course, some of us are doing the full 26.2. Run part of it with us, meet us out on Indian Mounds Road with some Gatorade (or beer or something) or just come and hang out a little bit. We're starting at the Y at 8:00 Sunday October 4
and the adventure continues....
