The 2009 Bagel Beanery Kids Marathon

Dear Runners,

Imagine if your mom or dad filled their car up with soda and cheese puffs instead of gasoline. Forget getting to school, you wouldn't even make it around the block! Did you know the same thing happens with your bodies if you try to put the wrong type of fuel in them before you run, walk or ride your bike? It's important to put food into your body that gives you energy so you can move and feel your best each and everyday but especially when you are in training.

Be sure to eat three good meals each day that include fruits, vegetables and snacks that provide you with good energy. Did you also know the food that provides fuel for your body can taste good too? Fun finger foods like cheese, yogurt, pretzels, crackers, peanut butter, carrots or sliced fruit make a delicious and quick afternoon snack. Or ask your mom or dad if you can make the quick and delicious Energy Bar recipe below. These are a great treat after school and will help you run like a cheetah, jump like a kangaroo and swim like a dolphin!

ENERGY BOOST BERRY & OAT BARS
8 oz. almonds
1/4 c. sesame seeds
1 1/2 c. quick-cooking oats (uncooked)
1/2 c. dried cranberries
1 c. blueberries
2/3 c. maple syrup
1 t. cinnamon
1. Heat oven to 275 degrees F.
2. Lightly grease 9" baking pan.
3. Grind almonds in food processor to a coarse meal.
4. Combine ground almonds and remaining ingredients in a large bowl and stir well. (This is a very messy but fun part for kids!)
5. Using wet fingers, press the mixture into the pan; bake for 1 hour.
6. Cool thoroughly in the pan, then slice. Makes 20 bars.

SOMEWHERE, OFF IN THE DISTANCE...

...the theme from Rocky is starting to echo in my head.  Less than three weeks now.  Many have done their last really long run, a bunch of you at our 20 mile training run this past weekend.  Maybe a long run this weekend, but then it's definitely taper time!

THE REVENGE OF THE HOOSIERS
Remember last year when we had more Canadians than Hoosiers running here?  Well, our friends to the south are making their move!  The score right now is Indiana 75, Ontario 60.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PRICE INCREASE!!
If you or someone you know isn't registered yet, it's time.  After the 30th, the price goes up another TEN BUCKS!  So, get those registrations in and save a little cash!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Boast from the Pace Team Director

Our race will have 45 very experienced pacers. That's about one pacer for every 70 runners.

By comparison, the Chicago Marathon has one pacer for every 450 runners, and the New York City Marathon has one pacer for every 1500 runners.

Universities like to brag about their faculty to student ratios, so why shouldn't we? The fact is that the Grand Rapids Marathon is a much more personal & friendly experience than the mega-marathons, and our pacers will be easy to find and happy to help you during the race.

Enjoy your tapering & we'll see you in a couple of weeks!

Dr. Rick - Pace Team Director

It's a Gateway Drug

After the Hogeye Marathon in Arkansas a few years ago, I went to a party with the local running club.  It was there that I watched probably the only complete Simpsons episode that I've ever seen.  It was about medicinal marijuana.  "The doctor says it's a gateway drug," Homer quipped.

Well, I don't advocate marijuana use, but you could look at the half-marathon that way.  Some of you doing the half are going to have so much fun, that next year you'll be back for the full 26.2.  Hey, we all have our own addictions.  Ours are just HEALTHY!

Staff Run - Next weekend--
Every year, the staff of the Metro Health Grand Rapids Marathon has what I like to refer to as a "Dress Rehearsal" a couple weeks before the marathon.  It gives us a chance to earn our medals and to check out the course in case anything "interesting" may have happened to it.
If you'd like to come out and get a final long run on the course, some of us are doing the full 26.2.  Run part of it with us, meet us out on Indian Mounds Road with some Gatorade (or beer or something) or just come and hang out a little bit.  We're starting at the Y at 8:00 Sunday October 4

and the adventure continues....

A LITTLE FASTER, AT LEAST

This weekend I had the honor of celebrating Dean Peterson's 100th marathon at Fox Cities in Wisconsin.  Nice event, and my fastest marathon since my knee surgeries.  (Still pretty slow though.)  Finished alongside the lovely Francine too.  Nice.  And, I have a pretty interesting series of coincidences along the way--read "Box 54 Where Are You" below.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
20 MILE TRAINING RUN
Saturday at 8:00 am at John Ball Park is the Official 20 Mile Training Run.  A semi-formal (NOT A RACE) run along much of the course hosted by Gazelle Sports.  Self-serve aid stations.
Sunday there will be a group leaving from the Y at 8:00 and running the half-marathon course.  After they get back from that, they'll be running through the downtown area admiring many of the Art Prize pieces.  Bring water bottles for the first loop, and a camera for the second.  Or skip the run and just meet up at the Y around 10:30 or so.
BAGEL BEANERY GRAND RAPIDS KIDS MARATHON
We had about 125 kids out last night to run with a bunch of clowns from the Ringling Bros And Barnum & Bailey Circus clowns.  Lots of run!!  Oops--I meant FUN!!
If your kids are already training but haven't signed up yet, DO IT NOW at www.grandrapidsmarathon.com/kids.aspx . After they log 10 miles, you can go to Gazelle Sports for half-off on a new pair of running shoes!  Pretty cool, eh?
Marathon Minute - On the Radio
Citadel Broadcasting has teamed up with the Metro Health Grand Rapids Marathon.  You can hear the Marathon Minute on your friendly Citadel stations!
From this week's spot (brought to you by West Michigan Sports Commission):
It takes a lot of work to train to run 26.2 miles.  But even while runners are training by running millions of miles, they're also raising millions of DOLLARS to help others.
We runners know that we are blessed.  We can move.  We're healthy.  We're positive people.  We want to share those blessings.
I recently met John, who's training for the Metro Health Grand Rapids Marathon.  While he's doing that, he's also helping his friend Jim who's battling Leukemia.  Together they're raising money for two different charities as well as fighting their day-to-day challenges with both training and disease.
Together, Jim, John, and thousands of other runners will make a big impact, through money, inspiration, and through the helping hands that they hold out to others.
I'm going to write a lot more about Jim and John before I'm done with it--stories like this inspire me!
Charity Runners - Matt Chapman
Last year the Metro Health Grand Rapids Marathon and its charity runners contributed over $30,000 to local, state, and national nonprofit organizations. This year we want to build on that success and give back even more.
We currently have 13 charity partner organizations that need our help and support now more than ever. These organizations are tackling challenges like fighting cancer, improving the lives of the disabled, and promoting health and fitness to our youth. The work these charities do on a daily basis is important work that affects us all, and that is why we feel passionate about asking for your help.
There is still time, here is how you can help:
1. Become a charity runner: Visit our charity page and choose a charity that means something to you. When you find one you like, click their logo and you will be directed to a page that explains how to get involved.
2. Run for a charity of your choice: Don't see your favorite charity? No problem, feel free to raise money and collect pledges for an organization that means something to you. Email mchapman@tapshoe.com  for more information.
3. Help us spread the word: Send our charity page to your friends and family. Tell them you are running in the Metro Health Grand Rapids Marathon and ask that they make a contribution to one of our charity partners on your behalf.
4. Make a personal donation: It's okay if you aren't interested in being a charity runner or collecting pledges. Instead make a one-time donation to one of our charity partners. Whether it's a little or a lot your dollars will go a long way!
Notes from Don--The Leukemia Team in Training is joining us this year.  Throughout Michigan, runners are training for three events on October 18th.  The Metro Health Grand Rapids Marathon, the Detroit Free Press Marathon, and the Nike Women's Marathon.  The Michigan organization, according to them, could have a MILLION DOLLAR DAY that day!
Johnnie Tuitel, my good friend and America's premier Handicapatilist is joining the My Team Triumph group going out at 7:30 on race morning, pushed by several friends who will be raising money for Alternatives in Motion.  It's an awesome charity that provides wheelchairs for people who can't otherwise afford them through their normal health insurance providers.
Box 54 Where Are You?
Or--the medals saga...
Part 1.  I called Michael, my Maxwell Medals rep, from the airport to inquire about my order.  I was en route to the Tamarindo Beach Marathon in Costa Rica.  "They just ordered another 250 medals"  he told me.  OK, that means I won't get a medal until sometime later in the mail.  Not a problem.  "I'll have my office send you one of the samples," he told me.  When I got to Costa Rica, I heard the same story from them there, word for word.  It's great having connections.
Part 2.  I arrived home last Tuesday morning, and later that day, I got a call from the UPS driver.  He had 53 boxes of medals, and he was at my old apartment.  Yes, I reviewed the order, but didn't look at the shipping address.  They had pulled my old address from 2007 instead of my new one from 2008 for the order.  A call to his supervisor made it possible for him to bring the boxes to my house, even though it was out of his area.  He said the manifest said 54 boxes, but there were only 53 there.  We figured the other one must still be at the terminal and I'd just get it on Wednesday.
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday....Still no box #54.  I'll call Michael on Monday and track it down.
Part 3.  My friend Dean Peterson ran his 100th marathon on Sunday.  Almost a year ago, he had invited us to come and run it with him.  So Saturday the lovely Francine and I headed for Appleton, Wisconsin to join him.  When we arrived in town, I called Dean to let him know.  "I'll be over in a few minutes.  I have something I think you'll need."
Dean is on the board of the Fox Cities Marathon, and when he sat down at a table in the marathon office, he kicked a box under that table. He looked to see what it was.   It was addressed to me.
He walked into our hotel with the box under his arm.  Box 54!
Fox Cities gets their medals from Maxwell too!  Apparently, one of the boxes got on the wrong UPS truck, and went to Wisconsin where the one person in the whole state knew what to do with it and had invited the guy it was addressed to.
So, box 54 is safely at it's destination.  Dean is in the triple digits.  I have my finisher's medal from Costa Rica.  Life is good!
Tick Tick Tick....
It's getting here!  A little over three weeks.  Preparations are going well.  Everything is coming together.
And on your end, your training is almost over.  The big event is almost here.
I'm PUMPED!  Can't wait to see all of you at the FINISH LINE!
Staff Run - Next weekend--
Every year, the staff of the Metro Health Grand Rapids Marathon has what I like to refer to as a "Dress Rehearsal" a couple weeks before the marathon.  It gives us a chance to earn our medals and to check out the course in case anything "interesting" may have happened to it.
Last year, for example, we found out that as we approached the 21 mile mark and the turnaround near Market Street, that the city had repaved!  The 21 mile mark and the turnaround were GONE!  Fortunately, I had GPS coordinates and was able to stick the marks right back into place.  I was pretty glad we ran it in advance though.
The 2009 Bagel Beanery Kids Marathon
Hey, all you speedy kids out there!
How's your training going?  Have you been keeping track of your miles?  Did you know that after you get 10 miles logged, you can drag your mom or dad to Gazelle Sports and get a half-off deal on a pair of shoes?  Pretty cool, don't you think?
We have a special treat for you:
Wednesday, September 23 at 5:00 PM
Special Training Run
Ringling Bros And Barnum & Bailey Circus clowns will be there.  We'll have circus passes, maybe a couple of goodies, and LOTS OF FUN!!
We'll meet at John Ball Park near the Park Street entrance at 5:00.  It's a 1/2 mile course on the grass.  You can run it once, run it twice, or run it three times if you feel really energetic.
Are you eating good food? Getting plenty of sleep at night?  I KNOW you're getting lots of exercise, right?  This summer, I've been in a special training program.  Sometimes, we run up hills just for fun.  Is there a cool hill near your house?  Go to it and run up hill for a little bit.  Then jog back down it real easy.  Then do it again.  Try to run it a few times, or until your mom or dad figures you've had enough.  It's great training.
SPECIAL OFFER FROM GAZELLE SPORTS!
After you complete your first 10 miles, bring your training log into any Gazelle Sports location, and get HALF OFF on a pair of Brooks running shoes!  You can either buy them when you go in, or get a certificate that you can use until October 31.
ONE MONTH TO GO!
REALLY HOT!  Yeah, that's what it was like in Costa Rica last weekend at the Tamarindo Beach Marathon.  Plus about 100% humidity.  I was pretty freakin' slow.  But I found a guy named Verny who was running his first marathon.  We hooked up at the turn (13.1 miles out) and started running together.  For 5K, we talked and worked through the course as the clouds cleared and the sun baked us.  Michigan summer never prepared me for this one.  He pulled ahead, but I suspected I'd catch him.  With about 11K to go, I reeled him in.  His wife Maggie had joined him at that point to run in with him, but I could tell he was struggling.  Instead of going ahead, I stayed to help.  We worked the kilometers, counting down.  I pulled ahead a bit, but kept him in sight.  3K.  2K.  1K.  The finish line!  I finished only a minute before he did, and met him with water & Powerade.  We shared the joy of his first marathon finish.  I remembered mine.  It was amazing.
It's only one month until many of you will do your first marathon right here in Grand Rapids.  Can't wait to share that moment with YOU too!
Citadel Broadcasting has teamed up with the Metro Health Grand Rapids Marathon.  You can hear the Marathon Minute on your friendly Citadel stations!
From this week's spot (brought to you by RW Baird Investments):
There's an attitude among marathon runners that affects other areas of life. My friend Dan was part of a big lay off at a local company.  And you know that "layoff" isn't temporary like it used to imply. It really means, "You're Fired."
Dan was the father of two young children.  He talked with me that night about his new opportunity.  It was his time. Dan was pretty good with computers.  He printed up some postcards and some business cards.  He walked around office buildings handing them out.  He mailed out 100 cards a week to businesses.  He offered to come in and fix computers, install software, troubleshoot, whatever.  People responded.  Dan was in business.
It was Dan's Marathon Minute, when he realized that he had to do is GO FOR IT!  Dan reacted to an opportunity and it changed his life.
But it's an Honest Sweat!  by Michael Selman
 I've never made a secret of the fact that I'm not an avid reader, and when I do read, it's usually for self-discovery, and not for entertainment. Most often, when I pick up a book, it is with a desire to learn how to improve some element of me, or to acquire tools which allow me to see things more clearly, or with the intent of learning to understand other people or myself in a different, more positive light.
Mostly, I read for inspiration, and last night was no exception. With my own writing in a dormant stage lately, I picked up an older book I hadn't looked at in a long time, with the hope of becoming once again inspired to write. When I opened it, the first thing I noticed was how discolored the pages had become since I had last picked it up. But though the pages had yellowed, the words were still as timeless and appropriate as when they were first written, and they danced off the aged pages as I read. The book was "Running and Being" and the author was George Sheehan.
I wasn't even half way through the forward before I realized that today was going to be a writing day for me. When I read about how, in is own opinion, Sheehan the writer and Sheehan the runner were inseparable and one would likely not exist without the other, I acquiesced, remembering how I used to feel the same way about myself.
Sheehan was not my first inspiration as a runner, but he was my first inspiration as a writer. Through him, I learned how to unite my two passions, creating a compound word "runnerwriter" which I define as the "path to the purest form of revelation and honesty." Sheehan chose to write immediately after his run, opting to towel off instead of showering because "Honest sweat has no odor." But if you look deeper, there's much more to it than that.
Running sweat is as honest as sweat can get. The activity of running breaks through the falsehoods and the colored filters, and reveals the truths about ones self, others, and life in a way that no other activity parallels, at least to the runner. It is the unique and seemingly antagonistic combination of acute awareness and complete serenity in the same instant that makes running sacred. Many refer to that feeling as "Runner's High." I think of it as "Runner's Truth" revealed overtly as honest sweat. Why should we be in such a hurry to rinse it away?
As I mentioned earlier, I have been experiencing another in a continuing series of bouts with writer's block. It's not that the ideas haven't been there. Running has been as enlightening as ever, and I've been learning more about the sport I love, the things I love, the people I love, and the person I am becoming than ever before. But somewhere between the run and the write, it has all been washed away time and time again. After being reminded again last night of how George did it, I'm confident that I'm back in the groove.
Sheehan knew better than to shower off the residue of the run before he captured his thoughts on paper. He simply ran, toweled off, and then wrote what the run revealed, while the thoughts were still fresh and honesty was still oozing out of his every pore. It resulted in primitive truths, written in modern words that will hold true for as long as the human species continues running and being.
So this morning I ran, accumulating new truths with every step. I delighted in feeling the salty truth serum dripping over my eyes, down my neck, squishing in my shoes, and saturating my singlet and shorts. Then, I toweled off, and sat down to write, still feeling the fresh film of sweat of the previous 3 hours through the equestrain trails of lovely Asheville North Carolina.
Ah. But it's an honest sweat.
I thought this was amusing...
I was trying to come up with something clever about being in Michigan and our Lions. But it was just making me depressed so I'm giving up on that one.
